A strong family tradition of military service (my father and both grandfathers served) and a desire to serve my country. Looking back at your military service, what are you most proud of? I received the Bronze Star for combat operations while serving with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 3 in Afghanistan. Were you deployed? If so, for how long and where? What were the biggest challenges of your deployment? I was deployed several times throughout my career, including Guam, Iraq, Spain, Africa, Eastern Europe and Afghanistan. Most deployments were 6-9 month periods. How did your military training/experience prepare you for your civilian job? My military service provided extensive leadership opportunities and provided the discipline and accountability that prepared me well for my civilian job. Was your decision to work for UnitedHealth Group based on its reputation as a military-friendly employer? Part of the reason I decided to work for UnitedHealth Group was its reputation as a strong employer for active duty and retired military. About Your Job Describe a day in your shoes. What does your role consist of? I am involved in the administration of the TRICARE contract that serves more than 2.9 million beneficiaries across the West Region of the United States. What’s the coolest thing about your job? Or, what gives you pride in your position? I take pride in the fact that every day, I am serving the men and women who serve our country as well as serving their families…the strength behind our military forces. About the Transition from Military to Civilian Work Were there any funny incidents during your first days on the job that showed how it is sometimes tough to switch from military to civilian life? I tell people the hardest thing about transitioning from the military to the civilian workforce is that every day, I have to think about what I am going to wear instead of just putting on my uniform. Did UnitedHealth Group do anything that helped you with your transition to the civilian workforce? The fact that UnitedHealth Group is a military-friendly company and the fact that it employs so many current and former military made my transition to the civilian workforce relatively easy.
