A gamer’s guide to paving a career path

But for one Latin American candidate, the Microsoft Careers website minimized that distance. As it turned out, the path to an exciting job here was basically a click away. When he was a kid in Brazil, Turn 10 Studios Software Engineer Gustavo Nunes became smitten with Microsoft’s Age of Empires series. It sparked his ambition to land a job in the gaming industry. But opportunities in Brazil were minimal. From then on, his quest for a career in games drove Gustavo like a McLaren blasting through Forza Horizon 2. It took years of anticipating immigration logistics, quelling math jitters, and simple persistence to get to Microsoft. Here’s how he did it. Step 1: Crafting the Master Plan When planning his education, Gustavo wanted to lay the foundation for a career in games. He was far from the epicenter of the U.S.-based gaming industry. From an economic perspective, attending college overseas was out of the question. Another key challenge: He’d need relevant experience to build a resume, but there were no companies in Brazil to pursue an internship in the AAA (Triple-A) game industry. Gustavo decided to start by studying computer engineering, with the hopes of securing a PhD and a scholarship in a STEM field, to ultimately land a visa and a role with a U.S. games studio. This seemed to be the ticket. For his undergraduate and master’s degree, he studied at Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC), which offered strong studies in computer science and engineering. Even though he was far outside the industry, Gustavo wanted to gain as much experience as he could in relevant areas of study. For his master’s degree, he chose computer graphics as the research area that would build his expertise. And he set the bar high: While pursuing his master’s degree, he researched, wrote and presented several academic papers on hardware tessellation.
