Virginia State Wins HBCU Sports Football National Championship Fan Poll

After more than 6,000 online votes were submitted in a fan poll since Monday, CIAA champion Virgina State has been named the 2014 HBCU Sports Football National Champion Playoff winner. Virginia State (10-3), received 3,961 votes. SWAC champion Alcorn State (9-3), finished second with 1,629 votes, followed by MEAC c0-champions Morgan State (474 votes) and South Carolina State (156 votes). After starting the season 0-2, Virginia State won 10 straight games, including the CIAA Championship Game over a Winston-Salem State team that hadn’t lost a conference game in more than 1,500 days. VSU had not won the CIAA football championship since 1996. VSU capped off their run with a 28-17 win over LIU in the Division II playoffs.
