Posted By: How May I Help You NC on January 26, 2015 Alabama State University alumnus Lonnie Washington (‘88) has been sworn in by Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley as the newest member of ASU’s Board of Trustees. Washington is filling a vacancy on the Board left by Birmingham businessman Larry Thornton, who resigned his position in November. He also serves as a municipal judge in Brighton and as judge pro-tem in Birmingham, Fairfield and Midfield. He said serving as a trustee will offer a tremendous opportunity to bring his decades of experience as an attorney into the board room. “I hope to work well with my fellow Board members and to set University policies that will enhance and give the University leadership every opportunity to succeed and meet our goals and expectations,” Washington said. Washington graduated from ASU with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1988 and earned a Doctorate of Jurisprudence from Samford University's Cumberland School of Law in 1991. He was admitted to the Alabama Bar in 1992. Upon graduation, he worked as assistant district attorney for Jefferson County, Ala., from 1993-1996. Washington said ASU’s English program taught him a great deal about critical and analytical thinking and prepared him for a successful career as an attorney. He recently was honored with the outstanding community service award by the Birmingham Metro Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
