University of Maine Career Opportunity: Assistant Professor of Mammalogy and Mammalian Health

University of Maine Career Opportunity: Assistant Professor of Mammalogy and Mammalian Health
Posted By: Hija Chang on February 02, 2015

As part of the University of Maine’s new academic initiative on Changing Ecosystems and Climate: Impacts on Animal, Plant and Human Health, the School of Biology and Ecology seeks candidates for a full-time, 9-month tenure‐track assistant professor position in Mammalogy and Terrestrial Mammalian Health. The successful candidate will serve the School’s teaching and advising needs in mammalogy and mammalian health while developing an internationally recognized research program in conservation medicine, which explores the relationships between human health, animal health, and the environment, and contributes to a new Center for One Health and the Environment in the College of Natural Sciences, Forestry and Agriculture at the University of Maine.

Duties and Responsibilities: The responsibilities for the position will be 50% teaching and 50% research. A successful candidate will have the background to contribute to undergraduate teaching in zoology, physiology, anatomy and other health science related areas. Initial teaching assignments will include a graduate course in the faculty member’s area of expertise (e.g., mammalian health and disease interactions, climate effects on biogeography and organismal health, biomechanics), an introductory undergraduate course serving health-related majors (e.g. the biology of organisms, anatomy and physiology) that alternates annually with an undergraduate course in mammalogy, and other responsibilities consistent with departmental and college needs. The faculty member is expected to have a strong interest in education, advise and mentor undergraduate students (including undergraduate research and honors thesis projects), recruit and train graduate students, serve on departmental, college, and university committees, be active in professional societies, and be committed to the Land Grant University missions of teaching, research, outreach, and public service.

The successful candidate will develop an internationally recognized, extramurally funded research program in mammalian health and conservation medicine.

Potential research themes include (but are not limited to):
• Environmental dynamics of mammal-borne diseases (and their implications for human exposure)
• Interactions among mammalian health, biogeography, and climate
• Mammalian physiology, behavior, or biomechanics in an environmental context

Mammalogists addressing such themes have the opportunity to interact with colleagues in a number of units and research centers on campus, including the School of Biology and Ecology; Climate Change Institute; the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Conservation Biology; the Ecology and Environmental Sciences Program; animal and veterinary sciences within the School of Food and Agriculture;
the Department of Molecular and Biomedical sciences; and the School of Economics.
This hire is one part of a cluster hire supporting the new academic focus on Changing Ecosystems and Climate: Impacts on Animal, Plant and Human Health within UMaine’s Signature area of Climate Change. Collaboration is anticipated between hires and with colleagues associated with the new animal disease diagnostic laboratory in Cooperative Extension. The successful candidate is expected to garner external research funding from a broad base of federal and regional sources (e.g., NSF, NIH, CDC, EPA, USDA, USFWS and the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife).

To apply: Submit 1) a cover letter, 2) C.V., 3) statements of teaching philosophy and research interests, and 4) the names, addresses (including titles and institutions), email addresses, and telephone numbers of four references. All materials must be submitted electronically in PDF format through our online application system at https://umaine.hiretouch.com. Review of applications will begin March 15, 2015, and will continue until the position is filled. Incomplete applications cannot be considered. Appropriate background checks will be required.
