CIAA and Project Life to Register Marrow Donors at 2015 Basketball Tournament
|
Posted By: Hija Chang on February 13, 2015 The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and Project Life will partner to save lives one swab at a time during the 2015 CIAA Basketball Tournament in Charlotte, N.C. Project Life Movement booths will be assessable at the CIAA Fan Fest presented by Toyota in the Charlotte Convention Center Halls A & B and at the Time Warner Cable Arena Concourse. Since patients are more likely to match someone who shares their ancestry, more African-American donors can increase the likelihood that all patients will find a life-saving match. About Project Life Project Life is a national movement to make life-giving bone marrow transplants available to more patients by testing and registering college students to increase the potential pool of volunteer bone marrow and tissue donors. Our focus is on recruiting young, healthy college students because they provide the most successful matches. Project Life began at Davidson College in North Carolina and is expanding to college campuses across the country. Currently, six of every 10 people who need a bone marrow donation are unable to find a suitable match. Every five minutes someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer, and each day there are thousands of patients with leukemia, lymphoma, sickle cell anemia and other life-threatening diseases who are searching for a bone marrow donor.
