Posted By: on March 17, 2015 FEATURED Content Change the Lives of Thousands While Changing Your Own. Join the Urban Teacher Corps in Baltimore or Washington, DC to learn to be an effective urban teacher while earning a master’s degree in education! Urban Teacher Center (UTC) is transforming the way people are prepared for a career in teaching. Through hands-on training, coaching and peer supports, we give teachers the skills they need to ensure that students in high-poverty communities are learning to high standards and have a chance to reach their full potential. By doing so, our teachers are changing the lives of the students, families and communities they serve as well their own. UTC is now taking applications for our Baltimore and DC Corps for the 2015-16 school year, with placement in late June 2015. While there is no restriction on your major or experience required, we accept only applicants who have good grades (generally, 3.0 GPA or higher) and who are exceptional people who gravitate to big challenges. Before you start teaching on your own, you’ll spend 1,500 hours working with teachers and students in real classrooms. What you learn through our coursework can be put into immediate practice in the classroom, helping to ensure that you have the skills to provide high-impact teaching strategies. Our individualized mentoring and support—from coaches and peers—is available longer than that of any other preparation program. In addition to extensive classroom experience during the residency, UTC teachers earn a master’s degree with a dual focus on general and special education that is directly relevant to the urban teacher. They also receive three years of one-on-one coaching. During the first year, participants receive a $20,000 stipend from UTC. Teacher salaries in Baltimore and DC are some of the highest in the nation. Both cities allow an effective teacher to earn six figures. Urban Teacher Center is an Employer of National Service. Our next application deadline is March 30 and we review apps on a rolling basis. We are conducting final interviews throughout the US over the next several months.
