BAHAMAS MINISTRY OF TOURISM TO SPONSOR STEM CAMP

BAHAMAS MINISTRY OF TOURISM TO SPONSOR STEM CAMP
Posted By: How May I Help You NC on June 29, 2015

Nassau, The Bahamas- The Ministry of Tourism is onboard as a major sponsor for the the Hack.IT summer technology camp set to take place July 13-July 17, 2015 at St. Andrew’s School in Nassau, Bahamas. Now in its second year, the camp is the brainchild of Aisha Bowe and her team.  Aisha is an award-winning Bahamian-American engineer who was one of the youngest people of Caribbean heritage to work with NASA.

Bowe is the co-founder of STEMBoard, a global engineering solutions company and is seeking to inspire a new generation of “STEM stars” from the region.

“I am honoured by Minister Obie Wilchcombe and the Ministry of Tourism’s generous sponsorship of Hack.IT 2015,” said Bowe. “Their support of this initiative ensures over 50 public and private school students throughout the Commonwealth of The Bahamas will have access to a world class program.”

Bowe noted that the Ministry of Tourism’s work was recently acknowledged by a U.S.

News and World Report that celebrated The Bahamas as one of the top 10 places in the Caribbean to visit.

She stated: “With the diligent work of the Ministry of Tourism of the Bahamas, not only are more people than ever slated to visit the Bahamas in 2015, but with their support, Hack.IT 2015 will continue our efforts to expose the youth from the islands of Grand Bahama, Eleuthera, Long Island, Andros and New Providence to the opportunities that stem from the technical fields.  The world is finding out what I have always known, The Bahamas is like no other place on earth.”

A distinguished team of professional engineers, scientists, and technologists, personally selected by the STEMBoard executive team, will be teaching the youth of the Bahamas and encouraging them to pursue opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) fields.

This summer, these specialists, led by STEMBoard founders Aisha Bowe and John Martellaro, have curated a innovative and inspiring program to further spread awareness and decrease the knowledge gap in STEM for the Bahamian student population.

This year’s camp participants will be honored with a keynote address by Dr. Bernard A. Harris, Jr., the first African-American to walk in space. An astronaut and veteran of two shuttle missions, Dr. Harris will not only deliver his life lessons and inspirations to the students during the culminating camp activities at St. Andrew's, but will also present the students with his book, “Dream Walker: A Journey of Achievement and Inspiration”.

For the 2015 summer session, STEMBoard has given students the opportunity to pick the education track of their choice based on the curriculum which is divided into 3 disciplines:  Aerospace/Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science/Web Development and Civil/Electrical Engineering.  This will culminate with a $1000 prize awarded to the student team who best leverages problem solving, innovation and technical skills to develop solutions that improve aspects of Bahamian life.
