Students Learn Strategies to Boost Black Engineering Graduates

To 10,000 by 2025

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), one of the nation's largest student-governed organizations, will host its annual Regional Leadership Conferences during July and August 2015. The three-day events, held in each of the Society's six regions, will bring together executive board members from many of the Society's 394 chapters. The conferences will present leadership development workshops and seminars designed to help the student-officers implement NSBE's National and Regional Directives for the 2015-16 program year. The annual conferences are the first opportunity for NSBE Regional Executive Board members to train their chapter counterparts on how to operate effectively as a board, use strategic planning and achieve chapter-level goals. NSBE's National Executive Board members were trained in June at the University of Michigan.

This year's Regional Leadership Conference theme, "Synergistic Leadership: Strengthening Our Foundation Through Collaboration," calls for all NSBE leaders to work together to achieve the primary goal of NSBE's 10-year Strategic Plan, which is to increase the number of black engineering bachelor's degree recipients in the U.S. from 3,620 per year to 10,000 per year, by 2025.

Attendees will attend general sessions; functional sessions that provide training for their particular leadership positions; professional development workshops; a corporate industry mixer; and entertainment to promote collaboration among NSBE collegiate chapters.

Neville Green is a chemical engineering senior at the City University of New York, and NSBE's 2015-16 national chair.

"This fall, we will launch our official campaign to graduate 10,000 black engineers annually by 2025," says Green. "This training that we are providing our leadership will help us as we endeavor to achieve this goal on one accord, with one vision, one mission and one voice."
