Savannah State adds Master of Science in Mathematics

Savannah State adds Master of Science in Mathematics
Posted By: How May I Help You NC on August 13, 2015

SAVANNAH – The University System of Georgia (USG) Board of Regents (BOR) approved the addition of a Master of Mathematics program at Savannah State University (SSU) during its meeting on August 12. The current academic year will be used to plan, finalize curriculum development, recruit students and promote the program. The degree offerings will begin with the fall 2016 semester.

Since 2007, SSU has created a strong and vibrant undergraduate mathematics program. During this period, the mathematics department has grown from five full time tenure-track faculty and 15 majors, to 11 full time tenure-track faculty, four full time temporary instructors, and 90 mathematics undergraduate degree program majors.

Jonathan Lambright, Ph.D., dean of the College of Sciences and Technology (COST), says, “It is a natural complement to our STEM-based School of Teacher Education offerings, and it helps to address the shortage of mathematics and STEM teachers within the K-12 system locally, in the coastal Georgia region, and statewide.”

Mulatu Lemma, Ph.D., professor of mathematics, notes that with the degree students can move on to complete a Ph.D., work in banking, finance, software development, for national labs, government agencies and research centers.

The mathematics program is one of the fastest growing programs in COST. The master’s level 36 credit hour program will be delivered through a traditional face-to-face teaching and learning paradigm and will require a six credit hour thesis for degree completion.

Established in 1890, Savannah State University is the oldest public historically black college or university in Georgia and the oldest institution of higher learning in the city of Savannah.  The university’s 4,900 students select majors from 27 undergraduate and five graduate programs in three colleges — Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Business Administration and Sciences and Technology — and the School of Teacher Education.
