BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Mississippi Valley State University enters the 2015 soccer season under third, head women’s soccer coach, Fabio Boateng and four preseason awards.

The Devilettes ended last season with an overall record of 4-11 and a Southwestern Athletic Conference record of 4-3. Even though MVSU endured a losing season, it was able to claim a place in the 2014 SWAC Soccer Tournament as the sixth seed. Valley faced Alabama State University in the first round of the tournament and suffered a 2-0 loss, ending in its elimination.

This year, MVSU started with high hopes as junior goalie Rita Gyasi earned the Preseason Goalie of the Year accolade. She also claimed a position on the SWAC’s Preseason First Team, where she was joined by teammate Nykosi Simmons. Heather Craddock also collected a preseason honor for the Devilettes as she grabbed a second team spot.

Mississippi Valley State claimed its first win of the year during its exhibition game against Bethal University, 3-1. Ernestina Abambila scored all three goals – one in the first half and the last two in the second.

The Devilettes head back into action August 18 in their final exhibition contest before the regular season. Game time against East Central Community College is schedule for 4:00 p.m.
