Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on October 06, 2015 District of Columbia – D.C., Maryland and Virginia Haitian Students Association (DMVHSA), in partnership with the Haitian American Caucus’s Volunteer Program (HAC), announced its proposal today to send 25 students to Haiti for ten days during their university’s winter break. This is the first trip the group will make to the island nation. “It’s time for us to go back to where it all began,” said Adriyanna Andreus, Chair of the DMV HSA’s board of directors. “We want not only to give back to our home country but also to set an example for other Haitian-Americans and inspire them to give back as well.” Students who participate in the overseas service project will work with the HAC to continue post-earthquake recovery efforts in Haiti. They will have the opportunity to work in medical clinics, teach in elementary schools, mentor local children, and assist in the construction of temporary and long-term housing for residents of the villages they support. Members of the DMVHSA are in the process of fundraising to ameliorate travel, lodging, food and equipment expenses for those traveling to Haiti. The trip will cost an estimated total of $46,000.00, but has gained a fair amount of attention among Howard students through the popular hashtag #Home2Haiti. “We realize the magnitude of this expedition—few other organizations have done something like this, said Berline Francis, treasurer of the DMV Haitian Student Association. “We need the funding to ensure our students are safe and can sufficiently help the Haitian people.” For more information about the DMVHSA, or to assist in the organization’s fundraising efforts, all (973) 207-7280 or e-mail dmv.hsa@gmail.com. ### D.C., Maryland and Virginia Haitian Students Association (DMVHSA)Founded in 2015 on Howard University’s campus, the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia (DMV) Haitian Student Association is an organization established by a diverse group of youth leaders, college students and young professionals from Haiti, Haitian descent and/or are interested in the Haitian culture.
