Huston-Tillotson University Recognized for Its Commitment to Diversity

Posted By: Huston-Tillotson University on October 12, 2015 AUSTIN, TX 10.12.15 — Huston-Tillotson University was recognized recently for its commitment to diversity at the Sixteenth National Role Models Conference, sponsored by Minority Access, Incorporated. One of the most prestigious conferences of its kind in the country, the gathering addresses issues of diversity and disparities in higher education while assisting colleges and universities to diversify their campuses and worksites to increase the pool of scholars from underrepresented populations. “Huston-Tillotson University’s doors have always been open to all races and ethnic groups,” said HT President and Chief Executive Officer Colette Pierce Burnette. “It is an honor to be recognized for our commitment that has been in place now for 140 years.” HT is one of the most diverse institutions of higher education in Texas with a population of 70% African American, 19% Hispanic, .05% Anglo, .04% International, and the balance Asian and Native American according to 2014 data. Huston-Tillotson University, Austin’s oldest institution of higher education, offers associate’s and bachelor’s degrees in more than 19 areas of study to a diverse population of students who are majority African American. The University also offers the Master of Education in Educational Leadership with Principal Certification. Minority Access, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, assists individuals, academic institutions, federal, state and local government agencies, and corporations of all kinds in diversifying their campuses and work sites. With the support of public and private entities and the cooperation of 170 colleges and universities, Minority Access implements and administers programs and services that advance the recruitment, retention and enhancement of underrepresented populations to improve diversity in research, technology, education and employment.
