Harris-Stowe State University Celebrates Homecoming
Posted By: Hija Chang on October 14, 2015

Harris-Stowe State University invites alumni, students, faculty and staff to join in the celebration of Homecoming 2015. This year’s Homecoming theme is “Back to the Future: Tradition Meets Change,” and takes place October 17 – 24.

The highlight of the Homecoming celebration is the Harris-Stowe men’s basketball game versus Indiana University Southeast at 2 p.m. in the Emerson Gymnasium on Saturday, Oct. 24. Beginning at 11 a.m., Hornets fans will participate in the Presidential Tailgate in the Emerson Parking Lot.

Among the Homecoming events sponsored by the Harris-Stowe State University Alumni Association is the 17th Annual Alumni Gold Gala on Sunday, Oct. 18 at the Harold & Dorothy Steward Center for Jazz Ferring Jazz Bistro at 3536 Washington Avenue in Grand Center. The evening begins with a reception and silent auction from 5 – 5:45 p.m., includes dinner at 6 p.m. and induction of six celebrated jazz artists into the Donald and Heide Wolff Jazz Institute’s Jazz Hall of Fame.

Local celebrated artists Anita Jackson, Cheryl Brown and Jeffrey Hardin are slated to provide the entertainment along with Wolff Jazz Institute Hall of Fame Honorees: saxophonists The Bosman Twins and pianists Herb Drury and Ptah Williams.

The late Eddie Fisher and Mae Wheeler are being inducted posthumously and local artists Greg “Happy Guitar” Haynes and Wendy Gordon, representing the late honorees’ music styles, will complete the musical entertainment for the evening.

Other highlights of this year’s commemoration include the Back to the Future Fashion Show on Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. in the Main Auditorium; a Comedy Show featuring Benji Brown, Spank and B-Phlat on Thursday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m.; general admission is $10 ($5 for HSSU students). The week of activities will conclude with a Homecoming concert featuring DeJ Loaf and Migos, hosted by DJ Shorty Da Prince, on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 10 p.m. in the Emerson Gymnasium. Tickets are $30 in advance and $40 at the door; guests must be at least 17 and identification is required.

Available on the University’s website is a full listing of the Harris-Stowe Homecoming schedule of events.
