Posted By: How May I Help You NC on January 12, 2016 Academic Student Support Manager - Young Men's Initiative (School of Education) Job ID: 13942 Location: Hunter College Full/Part Time: Full-Time Regular/Temporary: Regular POSITION DETAILS New York City's "Young Men's Initiative" (YMI) is a cross-agency enterprise that is committed to improving educational, employment, and justice outcomes for young Black and Latino men. CUNY and the New York City Department of Education are partnering with YMI to help improve educational outcomes for young Black and Latino men. To help accomplish this goal, CUNY is creating a teacher recruitment program primarily targeting, but not exclusive to, Black, Latino and Asian male students at multiple campuses with the goal of recruiting 600 teacher education students into the program over the next three years. Hunter College, one of CUNY's senior colleges, is seeking experienced an student support and/or teacher educational professional to serve as Academic Student Support Manager for this innovative initiative. The position will work with both the Dean of Students and the School of Education to advance the initiative. Additional duties include: - Develops and implements plans to attract and engage qualified Hunter and CUNY students into the program in collaboration with CUNY Central's Office of Teacher Education, Deans/Chairs of Education, and counterparts at CUNY colleges - Manages recruitment activities and makes final determinations based on established criteria - Develops and applies intervention strategies to removes obstacles for students from admission through graduation to ensure their progression and success - Resolves academic issues by providing policy information and/or referrals as well as working with other departments and agencies to advocate for student needs - Supports students in employment related activities, such as networking, certification and hiring - Provides academic resources and referrals for tutoring, certification exam preparation and/or other targeted student support services; offers general academic advisement as needed - Maintains program records including student files; prepares reports and surveys; collects and maintains statistical data on program activities - Evaluates program components on an ongoing basis and adjusts strategies and offerings accordingly in response to assessment results - Engages with YMI stakeholders, including the Mayor's Office, the NYC Center for Economic Opportunity (CEO), and the NYC Department of Education - Stays current on best practices and innovative approaches for student persistence and retention, with a focus on diverse learners QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's degree and six years' related experience required. Master's degree and familiarity with teacher preparation, certification, and hiring preferred. Experience working with diverse student populations is important. Must have excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills. Should demonstrate proficiency in computer, database skills, and use of social media. CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW - Manages a comprehensive support program to promote learning and academic success for a targeted student population. - Develops, recommends, and implements program goals and objectives to meet students' specialized needs; coordinates delivery of services across multiple functions, developing new programs and activities as needed - Advocates for students, and partners with academic and student support functions to ensure students effectively utilize programs and services; collaborates with counselors, mentors, and others assisting students - Maintains ongoing communications with targeted student population as well as department management, advisory groups, and external organizations - Collects data for, analyzes, and reports on activities and outcomes - Performs related duties as assigned. CUNY TITLE Higher Education Associate FLSA Exempt COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS Salary commensurate with education and experience. This position is anticipated to be funded through June 30, 2018.
