Women Basketball: Central State University cruises past Wilberforce University, 74-55

Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on February 09, 2016 The Central State Lady Marauders used the second and third quarters to take control and separate themselves, leading to a 74-55 win over Wilberforce University on Monday night. Wilberforce pushed CSU early as a jumper by Kendra Moss put the Bulldogs up 12-4 with 6:18 left in the 1st period. CSU closed the gap by the end of the quarter as a Sierra Harley three pointer cut the deficit down to 2. The CSU reserves began to make their impact in the second quarter as Kayla Horn, Aneisha Hardin and Brianye' Copeland helped CSU outscore WU, 21-11, in the quarter to take a 36-28 lead at half. The Lady Marauders took full control of the game thanks to a 13-2 run in the third quarter. Baskets by Harley and Shannon DeFoe CSU's lead ballooned to 28 after a Kourtni Perry layup put the Marauders up 72-44 with 5:24 remaining. WU's Brooklyn Peterson hit two late three-pointers to bring the Bulldogs to within 19 with 3:06 to go but neither team would score in the final 3 minutes and Central State easily coasted to victory. Central State outscored Wilberforce in the paint, 34-14. The CSU reserves combined for 29 points compared to 14 bench points from Wilberforce. Jordyn Bond led CSU with 16 points. Harley had 14 points, 3 assists and 3 steals. DeFoe came off the bench to finish with 10 points and 7 rebounds. With the win, Central State improved to 10-11 on the season. Peterson was the lone bright spot for WU as she finished with a game-high 22 points and 6 assists. Central State will be off until Saturday when they host SIAC rival Kentucky State at 1 pm.
