Posted By: How May I Help You NC on March 09, 2016 Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs? I was born and raised in Hayward, California. When senior year of high school came around and I first started thinking about where I wanted to go to college, I never even considered an HBCU. To be honest, I really did not know anything about HBCUs. A close family friend who is an alumna of Spelman took me under her wing and encouraged me to apply. She guided me through the process and when I was accepted I visited the campus and fell in love! I knew then that Spelman was the perfect school for me. What HBCU do you attend? What do you enjoy most about it? I am currently a junior at Spelman College. My favorite thing about attending Spelman is being surrounded by African-American women all striving to be successful. It is empowering to hear of all the Spelman Alumnae who have gone on to achieve great things and also to see my Spelman sisters on campus everyday achieving greatness as well. Whether it’s taking a stand against injustices or taking part in community service I am inspired each and everyday. Another one of my favorite things is the importance of Spelman tradition. Some traditions include the Induction Ceremony, celebration of Founder’s Day, and marching through the alumnae arch upon graduating. These traditions continue to honor the generations of Spelmanites that came before and to me signify the importance and value of the Spelman sisterhood. What is your major? What are your career goals? My major is Political Science. After graduation I plan to attend law school. I think it would be very interesting to work for a governmental agency like the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). I am passionate about combatting human trafficking and advocating on behalf of victims of crimes, as well as members of underserved populations. I hope my future career in the legal field can combine all of these aspects. Who is a professor that has impacted your life inside and outside of the classroom? How? One professor who has impacted my life is Dr. Marilyn A. Davis. Dr. Davis is an associate professor of Political Science at Spelman. Dr. Davis has been very influential in guiding me through my major, helping me find internships, and helping me to think about post graduation opportunities. She takes a genuine interest in all of her students and seriously cares about our success. Outside of the classroom I use many concepts I have learned in Dr. Davis’s Class and am also able to apply the knowledge I learned in her class and in my other classes. What advice do I have for future college students? I think my one main piece of advice is that you can do anything you put your mind too. Do not allow failure or not achieving a goal the first time to discourage you. Stay focused, study hard, and give 100% in everything you do. Try and visit college campuses early if you can, so you can get a feel for what it is like. Focus on preparing for your SAT and ACT. And lastly, do not fall victim to Senioritis! Do not feel like you have to have everything figured out. You have time to figure out what you want to do with the rest of your life. However, it is a good idea to utilize career fairs and other networking opportunities to start making connections early on. This concludes our interview. We look forward to watching the progress of Elissa’s HBCU experience. Thank you Ms. Spelman! If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
