Posted By: How May I Help You NC on March 31, 2016 ALUMNUS OF THE MONTH OF MARCH Our alumnus of the month of March is Lane Lady Kelly Raquel Boyd, a member of the Class of 1998. Affectionately known by her family as "Roc," Kelly is the 2nd oldest of four children and a native of Springfield, Tennessee, "The Home of the Yellow Jackets." Talking to her parents, Ms. Virginia Boyd and L.J. Covington, on the phone, weekly, is a must. A devoted member of the CME Church, Kelly's mother planted in Kelly's head, early on, the importance of God and education. When asked what are her fondest memories from her days as a Lane College student, Kelly replied, "I was instantly embraced the moment I stepped foot on campus. It was Lane against the world, and it was an awesome feeling." While at Lane, Kelly received her BA in English. To this day, she speaks about how great her English professors were and how they did not play with subject-verb disagreement. Kelly also often recalls how she loved becoming a member of the Lane College Marching Band under the leadership of Professor Kenneth Sampson. Not least among Kelly's treasured Lane memories is the special bond she built with her 22 line sisters in the spring of 1995 when she became a member of the Beta Chi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Kelly has been employed at Lane College for 18 years. She is a member of Lane's Millennial Circle of Investors and has served the college in numerous capacities that include: Library Assistant, Admissions Counselor, Director of Enrollment Management, Satisfactory Academic Progress Coordinator, First-Year Experience Instructor, Title IX Investigator, and Disciplinary Hearing Committee member. The lives of many students have been touched by Kelly. They stop by daily just to say, "Hello Ms. Boyd." She considers NFL player and Super Bowl winner Jacoby Jones ('09) as one of her "adopted sons" and to him, she has built a shrine in her office. Another member of the class of 2009 who benefitted from Kelly's positive influence is Crystal Griffin who noted, "She cared for me academically as well as personally. She was an instructor who gave me guidance on my educational journey and nuggets of wisdom about life." Let's salute Lane Lady Kelly Boyd! You may send her your well wishes at kboyd@lanecollege.edu. A special thanks to her sister, Kymberly, for sharing in this story.
