HBCU RECORDS TO RELEASE DEBUT SINGLES 4/29/16

Watch out major record labels! Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU), an HBCU located in Daytona Beach, Florida, launched a new student-run record label, HBCU Records, in 2015, which promises to deliver top talent by focusing on the lost art of "artist development." Founded by the great historical figure, Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, B-CU has a rich musical heritage which includes its Concert Chorale, the Wildcats Marching Band and now the emergence of HBCU Records, its student-run record label formed by the Mike Curb Music Business, Entertainment & Sports Institute (Curb Institute). Mike Curb, the legendary record company mogul (Curb Records), politician (former Governor of California) and NASCAR owner (Curb Motorsports/Racing), provided the endowment for B-CU to create the Curb Institute, which is the latest program to receive funding from the Mike Curb Family Foundation.

HBCU Records has signed two B-CU students to its artist roster: L. Paul Jackson, Jr. (Contemporary Gospel) and DJ DGlove (Hip Hop/EDM). The staff includes Steven Sharples, Director of Industry Relations & Public Affairs; Gloria Hawkins, Program Director; and Kris Browne, Social Media Coordinator. The student label staff functions include A&R, Marketing; Music Production and Promotions/Social Media Manager. The label’s student leadership team consists of Caroline Morley (Mass Comm major); Ania Ashley (Recording Technology major); and Kevin Deligny (Business major). Senior Alyx Richards, a Mass Comm major, provides PR support.

Label artist Paul Jackson is a native of Jacksonville, Florida and was the drum major in his high school band. He is currently a featured vocalist with B-CU’s Concert Chorale and although he excels in all types of music, Paul feels his calling is Gospel. “I love all types of music but my soul feels complete when I’m singing Gospel music. I want to record songs whose music has an R&B feel and the lyrics give a strong message about faith, hope and the will to overcome any adversity.” Paul’s first single for HBCU Records, “Champion,” co-written by Paul, reflects his personal journey of the trials and struggles he encountered as a youth that he was able to overcome.

It is a statement for all to realize they have what it takes to be a champion.
DJ DGlove (Daniel Glover), the label’s DJ extraordinaire, was a student at B-CU in 2011 when he decided to serve his country and entered the Army. After serving a tour in Afghanistan, detonating IED devices and subsequently injured in the line of duty, DGlove returned to B-CU in 2015 to finish his education. DGlove was born into a family of DJs beginning with his grandfather…”I used to go with my grandfather and father to their gigs and loved to watch the way they had the crowd dancing to all types of music from every generation. I’ve incorporated what I learned from them to form my own unique style.” DGlove is in demand as a DJ in Florida and has accompanied many artists during their Florida shows including French Montana, Ariana Grande and K Camp. DGlove has recorded his own single, “Good Time,” with Curb Records artist Larry Gordon for HBCU Records.

Curb Records’ artist, Larry Gordon, who appears on DGlove’s track “Good Time” is a Texas native who played high school football and remains a staunch Dallas Cowboys fan. Larry was signed to Curb Records as a recording artist and as a writer with Curb Publishing. He has concentrated on his writing for Curb Publishing which garnered Larry a song on the popular show “Love and Hip Hop” and also a feature film. The label has released a promo single “Good Man” which is gaining national attention and creating a solid fan base for Larry. “I really wanted to master my songwriting skills first and this helped me co-write not only with DGlove but also for my upcoming EP on Curb Records.”

The label will launch the two singles at its special Label Release Reception on Thursday, April 28, 2015 at beginning at 6:30 pm, Hall of Fame (Handfield Athletic Training Center-ISB & Lincoln). The event will introduce the artists, sample their new singles and provide students and guests with an opportunity to take part in a music business experience.
