Harris-Stowe State University Hosts Second Annual Take Back the Night March

Posted By: How May I Help You NC on April 29, 2016 Harris-Stowe State University’s Center for Non-Violence and Abuse Prevention holds the second annual Take Back the Night March at 6:30 p.m., tonight on the university’s campus. Students will meet under the Henry Givens Campus Arch on Compton and Laclede Avenue and march to the campus quad where speakers will provide information create awareness to help eliminate sexual and domestic violence in all forms. The event is held in conjunction with Project DEAMHI, Inc., The Women’s Safe House, Goodwill, Saint Martha’s Hall and The Links, Incorporated. “Harris-Stowe has a safe campus and our primary concern is providing a secure environment in which our students can learn, develop, graduate and move into viable careers,” said Emmanuel Lalande, Dean of Student Success for the University. “Tonight’s event is one of many activities held on our campus to inform students and the community about ways to mitigate instances of violence and abuse and to link with partners who provide vital information and support.” Harris-Stowe partners with organizations, such as The Links, Incorporated, YWCA, Safe Connections, The Women’s Safe House, Partners in Prevention and others to provide programs and panel discussions on eliminating sexual assault on college campus. In addition to the Take Back the Night March, the campus held roundtable discussions on “Healthy Relationships,” “Intimate Partner Violence,” “Sex and Alcohol” and produced video vignettes starring Harris-Stowe students that are used in training and presented in HSSU seminar classes. In addition, all incoming students take online training on sexual assault prevention and bystander intervention. In 2014, Senator Claire McCaskill introduced the SAVE ACT program in a public forum for colleges and universities on the Harris-Stowe campus. Beginning in the Fall 2016, the campus will implement the Step-Up Bystander Intervention program.
