CCC announces Class of 2016 Valedictorian, Salutatorian

Coahoma Community College is pleased to announce Gabrielle Scott as the valedictorian and Sandy Tomlinson as salutatorian for the graduating Class of 2016.

Scott, a native of Gunnison, MS, will lead the class of more than 400 graduates with a 4.0 grade point average.

She is a 2015 graduate of Clarksdale High School, and entered college with 12 hours thanks to CCC’s Dual Enrollment program.

In her graduation speech, Scott said she plans to encourage her fellow graduates to continue moving forward in their educational journeys.

“Don’t stop here at Coahoma, but continue on your journey to accomplish great things in life,” she said.

Tomlinson, a resident of Lyons, MS, said she decided to enroll at CCC after being laid-off her job of 20-years.

While attending college as a non-traditional student has been a challenge, Tomlinson said she’s proud of her accomplishments and thankful for the support she’s received during her time at CCC.

“I was really nervous and scared at first … I didn’t know if I could handle it being out of school so long,” said Tomlinson. “However, Coahoma has some very good instructors. The classes are small and the teachers really get into it… If I can do it, anyone can.”

Both Scott and Tomlinson are members of CCC’s Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and have received scholarships to continue their educations because of the organization.

Scott has secured a partial a scholarship to Mississippi State University where she plans to continue her degree business administration.Tomlinson plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Accounting on a full scholarship at Delta State University.

CCC’s Commencement is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, May 14, in the Pinnacle.
