HISTORIC COMMENCEMENT CELEBRATION

Posted By: How May I Help You NC on May 03, 2016 (May 7, 2016 at 10:00 a.m.) Distinguished leaders, scholars, and celebrities will participate in Wilberforce University’s Commencement Ceremony in celebration of the institution’s 160th year anniversary. The historic Commencement Service will be held on May 7, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. in the Alumni Multiplex on the campus of Wilberforce University, the oldest private historically black institution in America, where the Honorable Federal Judge Henry Wingate will serve as the keynote speaker. The Baccalaureate Service will be held on May 6, 2016 at 5:00 p.m. The keynote speaker will be Bishop Romey Coles, Jr., Pastor of Lion of Judah Ministries in Cleveland, Ohio. There will be 118 graduating seniors, and Miss Imani Brown, former Miss Wilberforce, has the highest academic average. Mr. DeAndre Dearinge is being honored for his stellar leadership serving as a student trustee, President of his class all four years, and Mr. Wilberforce. The Honorable Henry Wingate, the first African American ever to be appointed a federal judge in the history of Mississippi will serve as the Commencement Speaker. Judge Wingate became the Chief Judge of the Southern District of Mississippi, and he served in that position for a term of seven (7) years. As Chief Judge, Judge Wingate presided over a court of six active District Judges, six Senior District Judges, five Magistrate Judges, and three Bankruptcy Judges. Judge Wingate will be joined by the following distinguished leaders, scholars, and celebrities who will receive Honorary Doctoral Degrees at the historic commencement convocation: 1. The Honorable Roderick Paige, former Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education; 2. Mrs. Mary Breaux Wright, International Grand Basileus of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.- She will be joined by 150 national leaders of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority at the Commencement service. 3. Mr. Marion Meadows, internationally acclaimed jazz musician; 4. Dr. Dorothy Cowser Yancy, former President of Johnson C. Smith University and Shaw University; 5. Dr. Glenda Price, former President of Marygrove College; 6. Mr. J. Thomas Maultsby, Jr., President and CEO of United Way of the Greater Dayton Area; 7. Mr. Mark Wilson, President and CEO of Atlanta-based eVerifile, Inc.; 8. Dr. Sara A. Black, Chief of Force Development Flight, 88th Force Development Squadron, 88th Air Base Wing, Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio; 9. Mr. Clarence Bozeman, driver for Dr. Martin Luther King and retired Cleveland educator; 10. Mr. Kenston J. Griffin, President and CEO of Dream Builders Communications, Inc.; 11. Mrs. Cornelia Johnson, Director of Communication and Planning at Delaware Technical Community College; 12. Ms. Charlene Mallory, Principal of Cody High School in Detroit; 13. Dr. Yvonne K. Seon, founding Director of the Bolinga Black Cultural Center at Wright State University; 14. Dr. Algeania W. Freeman, President of Wilberforce University.
