U.S. Navy Awards Morgan $450,000 for Battery Energy Research

Posted By: How May I Help You NC on May 03, 2016 Morgan State University has received a three-year $450,000 award from the U.S. Navy to conduct a research study on the energy capacity of lithium-ion batteries. Dr. Kadir Aslan, an assistant dean for Research and Graduate Studies and professor at Morgan, will serve as principal investigator for the research and will manage a team of undergraduate and graduate students providing assistance with this project. The research, which begins immediately and continues throughout the summer, will take place on Morgan’s campus as well as at the Naval Sea Systems Command’s (NAVSEA) EOD Technology Division in Indian Head, Maryland. It will consist of evaluating ways to improve battery energy density by developing thinner and more durable cathodes. The enhanced cathodes are expected to improve energy storage of lithium-ion batteries, which, in turn, can help NAVSEA execute its missions more effectively for less cost. The Morgan research team will collaborate with Dr. Farhad Forohar of the Naval Surface Warfare Center’s Test and Evaluation Division. For the students involved in the research, this project will prepare them for their post-college careers, as well as serve as an opportunity to interest them in possibly working for NAVSEA, the largest of the U.S. Navy’s five system commands. The undergraduate students participating in the research include freshmen Zanel Camielle and Frank Coleman (both Electrical Engineering majors), sophomore Zeenat Kukoyi (Industrial Engineering), and junior Yohana Habtom (Electrical Engineering). Rounding out the team is Enock Bonyi, a Ph.D. student in Morgan’s BioEnvironmetal Sciences Program.
