Posted By: How May I Help You NC on May 03, 2016 UMES has added an impressive elephantine element to its mobile advertising strategy, thanks to some creative marketing efforts by the university’s Department of Athletics. Coach bus vendor AP Xpress / Pro-Tran of Hyattsville agreed to customize two vehicles in its fleet with University of Maryland Eastern Shore colors. "The Department of Athletics is really pleased to have worked out this deal with Pro-Tran/AP Express," said G. Stan Bradley, UMES’ associate athletics’ director for external affairs. "These 'rolling billboards' really help our efforts to continue to build the Hawk brand,” Bradley said. “We want the Eastern Shore, the Mid-Atlantic region and the country to recognize the name Maryland Eastern Shore when they hear it or see it, and these custom wrapped charters are another way to promote our great University." One of the buses appeared on campus in early April, prompting double-takes, social media postings and questions about who can use the mammoth mode of transportation. "This is great," said head track & field coach Ernest Barrett, whose team was the first to travel on the wrapped charter bus. "It makes the student-athletes feel like they are part of something bigger and really fills them with confidence and pride rolling up to an event in our Hawk bus." The 55-passenger buses primarily will be used by athletics teams heading to sporting events, but campus organizations with a large group looking to travel together can also reserve them by contacting AP Xpress / Pro-Tran, which is co-owned by 2007 UMES alumnus Tim Wilson. Wilson said he’s pleased to promote his alma mater in locales beyond the lower Eastern Shore of Maryland. UMES shuttle buses also feature a school spirit look“Who knows,” Wilson said, “some high school students, or their parents, might see one of the buses on the road and inspire them to check out UMES.” When not used by UMES, AP Xpress / Pro-Tran will rent its “Hawk Pride” rides to its other customers, exposing the university to new audiences along the Eastern Seaboard and Canada. “It's a wonderful opportunity for our athletes and others to travel in-style as well as get the word out about UMES up and down the East Coast,” UMES marketing director Alissa Carr said. When students returned from the 2015 summer break, they were greeted by three UMES shuttle buses fitted with Hawk head wraps to promote brand identity and foster school spirit. Feedback on the new-look shuttles was positive, she said. #HawkPride If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
