Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott Announced as Virginia Union University's 2016 Commencement Speaker

Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott Announced as Virginia Union University
Posted By: How May I Help You NC on May 04, 2016

Virginia Union University will hold its annual Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at Hovey Field beginning at 10:00 a.m. Robert C. “Bobby” Scott, the first African-American elected to Congress from Virginia since Reconstruction, and the second African-American elected to Congress in Virginia’s history, will be the keynote speaker.

Congressman Scott, a graduate of Harvard College and Boston Law School, is a Newport News, Virginia native who got his start practicing law in his hometown from 1973 to 1991. After leaving Newport News, he served in the Virginia House of Delegates and the Senate of Virginia. In both of these houses, he sponsored many laws that benefitted employment, health care, and education for Virginians.

Some of his accomplishments include laws that increased Virginia’s minimum wage, and improved health care benefits for women, infants and children.

Succeeding Thomas Bliley, Scott assumed office of the U.S. House of Representatives from Virginia’s 3rd district in 1993. Serving as the Ranking Member on the Committee on Education and the Workforce since he came into office, he has made sure that all Americans have access to quality education, make a livable wage, and has worked hard to dismantle the School-to-Prison pipeline.

Scott is a former member of the National Guard and the Army Reserve, where he was honorably discharged for his service in the Massachusetts National Guard and the United States Army reserve. He is a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and has been recognized in the Capitol Hill newspaper, The Hill, as one of the 25 hardest working Members of Congress.
