THE HONORABLE BRODERICK JOHNSON, PRESIDENT OBAMA’S CABINET SECRETARY TO DELIVER KEYNOTE ADDRESS AT 2016 UNIVERSITY OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA COMMENCEMENT

Washington, DC – The University of The District of Columbia (UDC) announced today that the Honorable Broderick Johnson, Assistant to the President, Cabinet Secretary, and Chair of the My Brother’s Keeper Task Force, will deliver the keynote address during the 2016 commencement exercises. This year’s commencement will be held Saturday, May 14, 2016 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, 801 Mount Vernon Place, NW, Washington, DC.

Mr. Johnson began his career in the public sector working in the House of Representatives drafting landmark legislation that includes the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. He has served as advisor to key presidential candidates; most recently as a formal advisor to President Obama during his 2008 and 2012 campaigns. Johnson also worked as Chief Counsel and Staff Director to the House Committee on the District of Columbia and Chief Counsel to the former House Committee on Education and Workforce, where he advised on education and employee relations.

“It is a great privilege to have Broderick Johnson as our 40th Anniversary commencement speaker. Throughout his distinguished career, Mr.

Johnson has remained steadfast in his commitment to education, workforce development and the advancement of our community, which mirrors the University’s efforts to create ‘An Advanced Public System of Higher Learning Where Dreams Begin,’” said UDC president, Ronald Mason.

In February 2014, President Obama tapped Mr. Johnson to serve as the Secretary of the Cabinet, and to guide the much touted My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) initiative. As Cabinet Secretary, he is the primary liaison between the President and his Cabinet and coordinates communications, policy, and logistics between the White House and the Cabinet, as well as managing issues that affect multiple federal agencies. As chair of the MBK Task Force he oversees a coordinated Federal effort to significantly improve the expected life outcomes for boys and young men of color and their contributions to U.S. prosperity. Since launch in 2014, more than 200 Communities have accepted the President’s My Brother’s Keeper Community Challenge, scores of corporations and foundations have committed to invest more than $1 billion to advance the goals of My Brother’s Keeper, and the MBK Task Force has announced dozens of new policy initiatives, grant programs and guidance – all working to make sure every child has a clear pathway to success from cradle to college and career.

“As a public servant, I am honored to be invited as the first commencement speaker under President Ronald Mason’s administration. His vision for the University makes this a timely opportunity for me to share my thoughts as well as those of President Obama to the UDC class of 2016 about the importance of quality education and community involvement in creating pathways to success,” said Mr. Johnson.
