First two U.S. Marine Corps officers commissioned at Tuskegee University

Posted By: Hija Chang on May 10, 2016 Since the Army ROTC began at Tuskegee University in 1918, the institution’s contribution to America’s legacy of military excellence has been significant. Friday, that contribution grew to include the first ever U.S. Marine Corps officers commissioned at the university. During a joint ROTC Commissioning Ceremony, two Naval ROTC cadets made history when they took their oath and became second lieutenants. The new officers are: Anthony J. Carter, a sociology major from Tuskegee, Ala., and Samuel Shannon, an English major from Puyallup, Wash. They were among a group of nearly 20 young men and women who gathered in the Tuskegee University Chapel Friday to receive their Oath of Office from Gen. Dennis L. Via. In his remarks to the new officers, the 18th Commander of the U.S. Army Materiel Command, urged them to strive for excellence in their profession and personal lives. “Make a difference,” Via said. “Go and claim your part of the Armed Forces.” Continued: http://www.tuskegee.edu/Articles/first_two...
