Harris-Stowe State University Ranks Among the Nation’s Most Affordable HBCUs

Harris-Stowe State University Ranks Among the Nation’s Most Affordable HBCUs

AffordableSchools.net lists Harris-Stowe in Top 25 in annual ranking

ST. LOUIS, MO, (June 2, 2016) – Harris-Stowe State University (HSSU) was named one of the nation’s top 25 historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) by AffordableSchools.net, which provides profiles of a large number of affordable public schools and private schools with solid academic reputations. The University ranked No. 14 and is the oldest institution on the listing. Rankings for this list were compiled with data from National Center for Education Statistics, a bureau of the Dept. of Education (NCES).

The website mentions that Harris-Stowe supports and supplements its 31 areas of study with dual-degree programs, internships, online studies and study abroad programs. The post highlights Harris-Stowe’s fairly low 13:1 student-to-faculty ratio and its small class sizes as indicators that can contribute to students’ academic success.

“Harris-Stowe is ranked nationally for granting degrees to African-Americans in mathematics and statistics and in education,” said Dr. Dwaun J. Warmack, President of Harris-Stowe State University.

“This recognition moves us one step closer to becoming a premier regional university and is one more reason for students and their parents to give Harris-Stowe a look.”

Because the ranking focuses on affordability, the website notes several positive factors: Any student can take up to 16 credit hours a semester for the price of 12; the university continues to offer the most-affordable bachelor’s degrees in the state of Missouri; and returning, resident combat veterans can qualify for up to 75 percent tuition discounts.

AffordableSchools.com also lists the university’s exceptional financial aid offerings and mentions that in the 2013-14 academic year, HSSU provided an average of $4,678 per receiving undergraduate student. In addition, nearly 85 percent of Harris-Stowe students received Federal student loans, for an average of $6,181 per receiving student, according to the website.
