Posted By: Victorio Loubriel on July 13, 2016 My View From Harlem – Langston Hughes and Jussie Smollett When Laurence Fishburne performed his stellar his one man show on Broadway titled “Thurgood, depicting the late Supreme court Justice Thurgood Marshall, his was one of the most remarkable performances I’ve ever seen. For those of us who may have encountered the late Supreme Court justice were treated to a unbelievable look back at civil rights and judicial history. My fellow Howard University Alumnus, Chadwick Boseman who gave his remarkable performance in 42 has signed on to star in "Marshall", an upcoming courtroom thriller about legendary lawyer and future Supreme Court justice Thurgood Marshall. Marshall will focus on a specific period in Thurgood Marshall’s life, years before he was appointed to the Supreme Court. As a young man, Thurgood Marshall, also a fellow Howard University Alumnus and protégée of Charles Hamilton Houston, worked for the NAACP, and just a few years before World War II, was sent to Connecticut to defend a black chauffeur accused of sexually assaulting and attempting to murder his wealthy white employer. The case was splashed across the tabloids, and Samuel Friedman, a young Jewish lawyer who had never before tried a case, was assigned as his partner. Thurgood Marshall and Langston Hughes were steadfast friends, having attended Lincoln University together(undergrad), as well as being members of both Omega Psi Phi and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternities. Throughout their lives, both of these two men often collaborated and stayed steadfast friends. Thurgood Marshall pictured in 1925 with NU Chapter at Lincoln University.. Many know of my interest in the late Langston Hughes, having known him. I’ve always felt that his biopic is one which should be made and has yet to come to the forefront of Hollywood – what a shame.. That said, I was very happy when the “Marshall” motion picture, casted Jussie Smullet to portray a young Langston Hughes. For once Hollywood got it right. Jussie looks like a young Langston Hughes and has the presence and the charisma to make the role his… Not like when Hollywood blew the deal with the Nina Simone biopic portrayed by “Not enough Black makeup can make you Black”, Zoe Saldana. Frankly, India Arie should have gotten the role. I don’t want to hear that India isn’t an actress, given that dramatic coaching would have help her bring the Nina Simone biopic to light – India has all the rest… I admit, I’ve never seen an episode of Empire, but that’s because I’m a fan of the real of the motion picture and real Empire, New Jack City with Wesley Snipes… All of us Harlemites which knew of Frank Lucas and Nicky Barnes know how close New Jack City was to the truth.. Wesley Snipes was unbelievable in the role… From what I understand, Empire fans lost their minds when rumors circulated that he might be leaving the successful Fox series to pursue other opportunities in film and music. Well, the latter part of the narrative is indeed true. Further, Jussie gave fans a first look of him as the honorable poet Langston Hughes for the upcoming film - I’m sure that Jussie will do other good things.. Marshal due to be released in 2016.
