The Role of White Hat Hacking: OurMine Targets Pokemon Go and TechCrunch
|
Posted By: How May I Help You NC on August 01, 2016 Along with celebrities and other high-profile targets, "service group" OurMine recently hacked the app sensation Pokemon Go in a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack, and Techcrunch, a popular tech news website, was tested by the group as well. OurMine, a white hat security team, targets online brands to reveal digital vulnerabilities and improve online security. OurMine states it does not lift and sell information, change passwords, or install damaging ransomware for profit. Despite these claims, however, the unauthorized invasion of private social media, communications, and app landscapes forces security experts to consider the pros and cons of friendly security teams that mimic the antics of bad actors. TechCrunch responded to the attack with humility and what seemed to fall just short of appreciation. In an article explaining the incident, they state, “As the security aphorism goes, either you’ve been compromised or you just don’t know it yet. Well now we know and we hope to be better about it.” On July 18, 2016, the news surfaced in various media outlets that a DDoS attack had slowed and stopped recent app sensation Pokemon Go. The same day, OurMine targeted Shuhei Yoshida, the President of Sony Worldwide Studios for Sony Computer Entertainment. Hacking his Twitter account, OurMine wrote “We are a security group, not a hacking group, we will give his account back immediately if he contacts us...” We talked earlier about the damage of DDoS attacks and the importance of penetration testing. OurMine has been pen-testing across the internet. In just the past six months, OurMine took aim at Yahoo executive Marissa Mayer, Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook, YouTube star Markiplier (Mark Fischbach), Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Jack Dorsey, co-founder and CEO of Twitter. While any unauthorized network entry is painful and exposing no matter the intent, the actions of OurMine and similar hacking groups’ actions remind users of an important fact of any digital ecosystem—your network is only as secure as its weakest link.
