Tuskegee University Student Produces Novel Series, Mo's Mix

Tuskegee University Student Produces Novel Series, Mo
Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on August 04, 2016

Javanna Plummer has published two novels, “Mo’s Mix” and “Mo’s Mix: Queen-dom” which are part of a novel series aimed at analyzing the effects of certain issues within the African-American community. This series tackles the implications of wealth, promiscuity, infidelity, culture, sexuality and power as these topics relate to African Americans.

This series opens up conversations about these issues through the eyes of Monique Ross, her family and her friends. Monique comes from an impoverished background with the mindset that she can build a better life for herself and, in many ways, she does. At 27 years old, she has a shared condo with her boyfriend, she is the CEO of a Black haircare business on the rise, and she has what she would consider a stable relationship.

Yet, after five years, her boyfriend wants to take that next step. When Monique finds out she’s pregnant, marriage just seems inevitable. As for Andre, Monique’s companion, he comes from a large family who has a multicultural background. In his personal life, he has had to search for cultural acceptance within himself while also being the man of his family’s household after his father passed away. He battles with finding his voice and his passion.

Monique’s older brother James, on the other hand, has a strong voice and strong grip on the women in his love life. In James’s younger days, he fell in love with Monique’s best friend Camille and Camille became the mother of a child. Out of pressure and fear, James convinced her to give this child up for adoption. Camille did so thinking that James would marry her because of it, but James decided to marry Laila, his on again/ off again girlfriend, instead. James is faced with a battle between selfishness and responsibility while Camille must deal with her internal plights.
Camille was a foster child who grew up angry at her mother for abandoning four children after Camille’s father had a mental breakdown and was taken to a psych facility.

So, Camille used sex as a way to escape the demon’s that surrounded her. Like Andre, she is of mixed racial make-up, but her story is about her finding peace with the white part of herself while also finding peace with some of the questionable decisions she has made. However, Camille is not the only one who has made tough decisions.

After shutting down his business upon notification of his aunt’s death, Monique’s eldest brother Daniel was on a downwards spiral. Although he had a long term relationship with Malcolm Khan, Daniel believed that God was ashamed of Daniel’s desire for men, which is why God took Daniel’s relative. Malcolm’s return in “Queen-dom” signals the fact that Daniel battles for acceptance as a homosexual Black man in a world dominated by heterosexual white men.

This series is relevant today as women’s issues, namely African-American women’s issues, have been the source of much discourse. While it focuses on contemporary issues, it is relatable to all age groups and races because it tackles issues that affect people of all backgrounds. Javanna Plummer requests promotion of these novels on various outlets. Information about the novel series can also be found at the links listed below.
