Posted By: Dr. Lametra Scott on September 06, 2016 Greetings on behalf of Breaking The SSickle Cell Cycle Foundation, Inc.! Did you know that September is National Sickle Cell Awareness Month? Sickle cell disease is one of the most common genetic blood disorders in the country. It is characterized as a painful, chronic, organ-damaging, life-long disease. The pain attacks are unpredictable and there is no cure to stop the disease outside of a bone marrow transplant that many people are not candidates for. It is inherited when 2 parents who have sickle cell trait pass that gene on to their child and the child has a 25% of chance of having sickle cell disease or a 50% chance of having sickle cell trait themselves and also the possibility of passing this trait on to even their children. These statistics are true for each pregnancy, so the chances of passing the gene on do not decrease over time for trait carriers. Currently 100,000 people in the US have sickle cell disease and millions of people around the world carry sickle cell trait and don't even know it. Trait carriers, under normal circumstances, do not typically display symptoms of the disease and generally live a normal life. The biggest effect trait carriers have on future generations, is that they can pass this gene on to their children. THE CYCLE OF SICKLE CELL DISEASE MUST BE STOPPED! DO YOU KNOW YOUR TRAIT STATUS? Breaking the sickle cell cycle starts with YOU! Each September, thousands of people in the US participate in activities that help promote Sickle Cell Awareness to help encourage people to get trait tested and KNOW their trait status. Although this is a disease disproportionately affects a significant amount of minority populations, ANYONE can be affected. Currently, there is not a medication to cure sickle cell disease. Education and advocacy are our best tools to help fight and eliminate the occurrence of sickle cell disease within our families and communities. To help fight this national cause, Breaking The SSickle Cell Cycle Foundation, Inc. needs your help. We invite you to join with us and continue to raise sickle cell awareness in the Nashville community by supporting our 2nd Annual Break The Cycle Sickle Cell Bowl-A-Thon on Saturday, September 24,2016 at Tusculum Strike & Spare 5315 Nolensville Rd. Nashville, TN 37211 from 3-6pm. Your strikes, and even the spares, help provide awareness, education, and prevention of sickle cell disease to at-risk communities in the Nashville area. A Grand Prize will be awarded to the TEAM (6 or more bowlers) with the highest score (fundraising $+ bowling score)! Raffle prizes also will be given away. You don't want to miss this!! Sickle Cell trait testing will be available! Get your tickets today! https://www.eventbrite.com/e/break-the-cyc...
