Why Do I Have to Submit A Resume and What Does It Mean?

Q. Why Do I Have to Submit A Resume and What Does It Mean?

A. A resume is a marketing highlight of your own experience, highlights and accomplishments. This gives you the opportunity to shine from the perspective of the employer of problems that you have solved. It is widely used by every employer and gives the employer a glimpse of what you have accomplished in a period of time. It also lets the employer know how you’ve accomplished it and it gives insight into yourself. In most cases, an employer has about 20 seconds to look over your resume. So, what you put on paper you have to make it count.

Q. Do I have to submit every job I have ever had on my resume?

A. No you don’t have to submit every job you’ve ever had. You should submit the job that is related to the job description. The going trend is no more than 10 years of employment. If you don’t have 10 years of employment, then list the jobs you have that are related to the job description and put the others in a different section. If that doesn’t work, then put the jobs you have paying special attention to the functions of the job that are related to the job description. If you don’t have enough experience, then use your volunteer experience or your role in an organization to compensate for it.

Q. What is most critical when preparing my resume?

A. What is most critical when preparing your resume is located in top third of the resume. Which after listing your name and address, one should have all of the following.
When an employer looks at your resume, they want to see the position you are applying for example: Training Manager, Account Payable Coordinator, Customer Service Representative, etc. Second, the next thing they focus is the Profile Summary, the Summary Statement, the Executive Profile, or Profile, this replaces the Objective Statement. The Objective Statement is not used anymore. Third, is Professional Experience, Last is Education and Organizations or Volunteer Experience.

We will go more into the Profile Statement in the next publication. If you liked this article and want to submit your question about your resume. Do so, at resumereminders@gmail.com. For speaking engagements, you can contact her at
