Posted By: How May I Help You NC on October 06, 2016 By KATHERYN HAYES TUCKER, Daily Report Georgia Court of Appeals Judge Herbert Phipps gave a rousing speech Thursday, Sept. 29 at a ceremony to unveil his retirement portrait, lamenting the need to fight again the civil rights battles of the past and calling on all people—especially lawyers—to show the courage to stand up for justice. “Much remains to be done,” Phipps said. “Each person here has a role to play in the pursuit of liberty and justice for all.” The judge said it is “regrettable that many of the issues that divide us” call to mind the injustices of the past, and that too many people remain silent in fear of “losing a friend or a dollar.” Phipps will retire at the end of November at the age of 75, after a 45-year career that started with a civil rights practice in the segregated South.
