Huston-Tillotson University Announces its October Calendar of Events

Posted By: Huston-Tillotson University on October 10, 2016 (AUSTIN, Texas) 10.10.16 — Events ranging from the Charter Day Convocation to Preview Day have been scheduled at Huston-Tillotson University and are open to the community. Below is a listing of October 2016 events. The Third Annual Building Green Justice Forum will be held on Thursday, Oct. 13th from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Dickey-Lawless Auditorium. This year’s theme is “Race, Health, and the Environment.” The event is open to all with a RSVP required for the complimentary lunch. RSVP at www.htu.edu. A campus favorite for the community and students—Poetry on the Patio—is scheduled on Thursday, Oct. 13th from 10 a.m. to noon on the Downs-Jones Library patio. Original as well as established poetry and prose from students and noted authors in the Central Texas community are showcased during this fall event. Plan to bring or purchase your lunch on campus to enjoy the outdoor library setting and selected works. Refreshments following the program. Rev. Sylvester Chase and the members of Wesley United Methodist Church invite the community to their annual University Day on Sunday, Oct. 16th at 10 a.m. All are invited to share the history and legacy of Huston-Tillotson University that was once housed at Wesley. Huston-Tillotson University President and Chief Executive Officer Colette Pierce Burnette will speak and the concert choir, under the direction of Dr. Gloria Quinlan, will render music. Your conscious will be challenged during these 35 one-minute plays that all address the widely shared and contested statistic that every 28-hours a black person is killed by vigilante, security guard, or the police in the United States. The plays were developed on the ground in Ferguson, Missouri, with noted playwrights, activists, artists and community members. The community performances will be held on Saturday, Oct. 22nd at 4 p.m. in King-Seabrook Chapel CarShandra Hollins and Gabriel Russell, representing Huston-Tillotson University as Queen and King, respectively, will be presented to the community during this royal court coronation on Thursday, Oct. 27th at 7 p.m. in King-Seabrook Chapel. Hollins is a junior, majoring in biology with aspirations of a career in the teaching field, as well as medical school. She is from Fort Worth, Texas, and the daughter of Roshandra and Carlos Hollins. Russell is a sophomore education major also from Fort Worth. He plans to pursue a master's degree in education. He is the son of Eboni and Gabriel Russell. Reception following the coronation in the Davage-Durden Student Union. Huston-Tillotson University will celebrate 141 years of providing access to higher education during the Charter Day Convocation on Friday, Oct. 28th at 10 a.m. in King-Seabrook Chapel. The program is full of tradition and pageantry. Alumnus Rev. G.V. Clark, Pastor, Mount Zion Baptist Church, is the keynote speaker. The celebration highlights HT’s 141-year history and the merger of Samuel Huston College and Tillotson College into Huston-Tillotson College in 1952 and what is now Huston-Tillotson University. The program also features HT’s Concert Choir, under the direction of Dr. Gloria Quinlan; and the recognition of top ranking students. Prospective students and their parents are invited to discover Huston-Tillotson University during HT Preview Day on Saturday, Oct. 29 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on the Huston-Tillotson University Campus. HT Preview Day provides an opportunity for prospective students to sample the college experience, tour the campus, meet faculty and staff, obtain information about majors, and receive scholarship and financial aid information. Youth ages 8 to 12 are invited to the Huston-Tillotson University Baseball Clinic, scheduled Saturday, Oct. 29 from 9 a.m. to noon at Downs Mabson Field, 2816 E. 12th Street. Huston-Tillotson University has a proud baseball tradition that shaped a way of family life for the close knit community that surrounded the University. The community is invited to encourage youth to become a part of an intense, yet fun learning experience at one of Austin’s finest academic and athletic institutions.
