CUTTING EDGE SPORTS MANAGEMENT NAMES COACHING STAFF FOR INAUGURAL HBCU SPIRIT OF AMERICA BOWL
Neil Malvone, CEO and Founder of Cutting Edge Sports Management, host of Dream Bowl Weekend and the HBCU Spirit of America Bowl, is proud to announce the selection of the head coaches and coordinators for the inaugural HBCU college football all-star game. The HBCU Spirit of America Bowl, which will be played on January 15, 2017 at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex, will feature 110 of the best players from all HBCU football programs from across the country. The HBCU Spirit of America Bowl and Dream Bowl Weekend will celebrate the tradition, heritage, and community of HBCU football with its athletes, fans, students, and alumni, by capturing the spirit found on the over 100 HBCU campuses around the nation.
The head coaches for the HBCU Spirit of America Bowl will be Coach Custavious Patterson of Wagner College and Coach Adrian Jones of Shaw University. For Coach Patterson, this will be his third year as a coach during Dream Bowl Weekend after having served the past two seasons as a head coach in the Dream Bowl games. “Coach Patterson’s leadership skills, game planning, and experience coaching college all-star players will be a big benefit for our first HBCU Football game,” stated Malvone.
Coach Jones was hired this season as the new head football coach at HBCU program, Shaw University. Prior to joining Shaw University, Coach Jones was the assistant coach and running backs coach at NC Central where he helped the Eagles win two CIAA championships in 2005 and 2006 and the 2006 Black College National Championship squad.

“His history and success in HBCU programs were important criteria for our selecting Coach Jones to lead one of the squads in our inaugural game,” said Eric Galko, President of Optimum Scouting and member of the HBCU Spirit of America Bowl Selection Committee.
Rounding out the coaching staffs, Coach Patterson will be joined by Coach Allen Suber of Alabama State and Kentucky State’s Chris Smeland as offensive and defensive coordinators respectively. Offensive coordinator Steven Smith from Albany State and defensive coordinator, Herb Pickens, Head Coach at Lincoln University (Pa) will join Coach Jones on the sidelines. The coordinators were chosen for their considerable NFL coaching and playing experience and HBCU coaching expertise. They will add leadership, knowledge, and experience to the HBCU Spirit of America Bowl and the HBCU all-stars will have benefit from their wisdom on what it takes to make it to the next level.
With the coaches in place, the focus now will be on filling their rosters with talented HBCU players as CESM will make the HBCU Spirit of America Bowl an opportunity to both celebrate HBCU seniors and their achievements, along with give them a chance to further their football career.
