ASU Launches Design Competitions for its Sesquicentennial Celebration in 2017

Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on October 27, 2016 Alabama State University turns 150 years old in 2017 and to prepare for an incredible year of celebration and thanks, it is kicking off three design competitions to help it both honor its fabled past and to keep an eye on its incredible future. Since its founding in 1867 by nine former slaves, ASU has been dedicated to education, research, service and improving people lives through its championing, promoting and defending justice, equality and fair-play for all people. To commemorate its Sesquicentennial, the ASU College of Visual and Performing Arts under its dean (Dr. Tommie 'Tonea' Stewart) is holding three competitions that are open to both the University's alumni and students, which includes a design competition for a special commemorative academic mace, a Sesquicentennial medallion and for the composition of an original song that commemorates the 150th benchmark event. SESQUICENTENNIAL MACE DESIGN Each mace design should incorporate imagery and/or symbols that are significant to Alabama State University. Designs also should include a symbolic representation of its founders - the “Marion - Nine” - in some form. The winning entry will be professionally manufactured and used throughout the celebratory year at academic functions. Instructions: Each entry will consist of drawn plans for one academic mace (one view from the front and one for the side may be necessary). Works may be completed in traditional or digital media. Drawn and printed entries may be submitted to room 210 ASU Tullibody Fine Arts Center. Digital entries may be emailed as .pdf files to asuvisart@gmail.com SESQUICENTENNIAL MEDALLION DESIGN Each entry should incorporate images that are significant to ASU. Every entry should incorporate text that includes the image, number or word: "150, 150th or Sesquicentennial." Each entry must also include a representation of the “Marion - Nine” in some form. This may take the form of portraits or symbols, such as nine stars, nine flames, etc. The winning design will be professionally fabricated as a 2 x 2 inch circular medallion. Instructions: Each entry will consist of two designs; one for the front of the medallion and one for the back. Works may be completed in traditional or digital media format. Designs may be submitted on paper to room 210 Tullibody Fine Arts Center or .pdf files may be emailed to asuvisart@gmail.com. SESQUICENTENNIAL SONG-WRITING CONTEST Each entry will consist of one 3 to 4 minute long original song scored for any combination of voices or instruments. The song must incorporate gospel influences and African influences. Entries must include a score and a recording demo for evaluation. Instructions: Song entries can be either electronically generated or performed by live musicians. Scores must be submitted in .pdf format and recordings must be submitted in .mp3 format and must be sent to either room 210 ASU Tullibody Fine Arts Center or emailed to asuvisart@gmail.com. The winning entry will be recorded and featured during the 2017 Founders’ Day Convocation. Contestants in each category must be sure to include the following in each and every one of their submissions: name, address, daytime phone, email - address, class rank for current students and graduation year for alumni. WHO CAN ENTER Only current ASU students and alumni are eligible to submit entries. One entry form must be submitted for each and every category. WINNING AWARDS The winner in each category will receive an award of $500 for the purchase and exclusive rights/use of the winning design by Alabama State University. DEADLINES/AWARD NOTIFICATION The deadline for entry for all three contests is Nov. 28, 2016. Late entries will not be accepted. Incomplete or unfinished entries will not be considered or judged. Award notification for all three contests will be on December 5, 2016.
