Creative Education: How Music and Learning Go Hand in Hand

Creative Education: How Music and Learning Go Hand in Hand
Posted By: Dixie Somers on November 07, 2016

While learning may seem like a dull process to some, it doesn’t have to be. One way to liven up learning and make it more effective is to integrate music into educational programs. Music has been an important part of human culture and the learning process for thousands of years for very good reasons. Below are some of the reasons why music and learning to hand in hand.

Music Boosts Memory

According to PBS, music has been shown to have the ability to increase the scores of patients that suffer from Alzheimer’s disease and dementia on different memory based tests. This is due to the parts of the brain that music stimulates. It causes people to recall specific information from the past far easier than if music was not played. Since memory is a big part of learning, music can be very beneficial to helping the process.

Music Makes Learning Fun

In certain cases, young children learn better when they don’t know they’re learning. This is true of educational activities that involve play. It is also true of music. Having children learn the lyrics to a song that teaches a lesson and then sing it together can certainly be an effective way to engrain that information into their brains.

Singing is an activity more associated with fun than more straight forward lectures and school work. They will be more enthused about taking part in the process.

Music Is Culture

Learning about different regions of the United States, different countries and different historical eras requires examining the culture of different people. Music is certainly part of every rich culture. Sharing that music with children, whether it is Beethoven’s 5th or Russian folk music, can teach children a lot about history, people and culture. This can of course accomplish far more than only reading about cultural artifacts in a more disconnected way.

Music Can Be a Career

The primary goal of education is to prepare students for a future career. One reason why music should certainly be taught as part of any quality educational program is to help spark a passion for music in the youth. There are many great options for pursuing a career in music. Even an online master’s in music education can allow a person to teach music to students. Others may go on to be professional musicians that create music for a symphony orchestra or even television programs.

Music is a very important part of learning and has been since nearly the beginning of human history. Any education program worth its salt should have music as part of its curriculum.
