Fight the Mental Block: 5 Tips for Staying Sane in College

Fight the Mental Block: 5 Tips for Staying Sane in College
Posted By: Dixie Somers on November 17, 2016

College can be quite stressful for those who are not prepared. Whether you are in a difficult major or you just aren't used to this level of academic rigor of an online master of science in applied psychology, you can find your brain blocking your best efforts to learn. Fortunately, the five tips below can help you relax and put your mind back on track.

Take a Breather Class

Not every class in college has to be life or death. Take a class that allows you to learn a creative skill or participate in an activity you enjoy without requiring you to do much homework. These classes can help break up the monotony of your day and help you fill up your credit requirement without driving you crazy.

Exercise

When your body feels good, your brain can relax. It's simple, but it's something many stressed college students tend to ignore. If you're a large university, you've likely got access to a free gym—so use it! If not, you can take up running or walking just to get some fresh air.

Factor in Break Time

If you are taking so many classes that you can't sleep, you're doing something wrong.

Take a look at classes and realistic homework time, and make sure to factor in breaks. If you can't complete it all—including breaks—then you need to readjust. Factoring in break time can help you to get rid of some of college's stress.

Join a Non-Academic Club

Clubs (and by extension, fraternities) can be a hugely beneficial part of college. When the clubs focus on a single, non-academic activity, they give your brain space to work. Join a club that focuses around something you love, but that doesn't ask too much in terms of membership. This can become part of your weekly routine and a way for you to blow off stress.

Be Realistic

Perhaps the best way to fight the insanity of college is to plan ahead. Take a look at the courses you need to take and plot a path that minimizes your stress. Don't take your two biggest classes in the same semester if you can help it, and always space things out so you have time for yourself. Nothing helps keep you centered like a good schedule.
If you want to succeed academically, you need to stay healthy and sane. Make time for yourself and time for fun so that your brain has time to recharge. With a little effort, you can get back on track in no time.
