4 Tips for Landing a Gig After Earning Your Healthcare Degree
|
Posted By: Anica Oaks on November 30, 2016 Whether you have just signed up for your first class or recently started picking out your graduation gown, here are some tips you can use to land your first job after school. 1. Pad Your Resume Before GraduationMany degrees require quite a bit of work, but that doesn't mean you can ignore all other aspects of your life. A graduate who has nothing on their resume other than a degree is not an ideal prospect for many employers. Even if you are doing nothing more than working a part-time job, you should do everything in your power to create a diverse resume that shows off all of your skills and traits. Completing internships at a company in your field is a great way to earn industry experience while you are still in school. 2. Make Sure Your Degree Is MarketableThere is nothing wrong with following one's passions, but expecting an immediate job offer in a specialty medical field is not always practical. Students who are not sure of what direction they would to take should choose a degree that will offer them as much flexibility as possible. Options such as a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or an Associate of Applied Science give students the ability to enter the medical field immediately and then branch off to a specialized career down the road. 3. Few things are as beneficial to graduate students as finding a mentor that can guide them through this complex process. Those who can't find a mentor should consider speaking with their school's alumni association to see what resources are available to graduates. In many cases, these departments are contacted by employers who are looking for graduates with very specific degrees and skills. They might also offer to keep a copy of your resume to give out to “headhunters” that come looking for new employees. 4. Be Wary of Gaps in Your ResumeAccording to the Harvard Business Review, 85 percent of hiring managers are fair in addressing work gaps in one's resume. That doesn't mean students shouldn't be doing everything in their power to prevent gaps of more than a few months. Luckily, taking a little extra time to expand your skills could be enough to have them overlook any lack of work that has taken place in the last year or two. Many specialists suggest taking seminars, volunteering, or applying for contract work to continue expanding a resume. Even in a growing industry, getting one's foot in the door is not always the easiest of tasks. These few tips should help you set yourself apart from the competition when it comes time to put your degree to good use.
