Hampton University to Host VHSL Group 5A and 6A State Football Championship Games Dec. 10

Hampton University to Host VHSL Group 5A and 6A State Football Championship Games Dec. 10
Posted By: How May I Help You NC on December 06, 2016

Hampton University’s Armstrong Stadium will play host to the 2016 Virginia High School League (VHSL) Group 5A & 6A Football State Championships, Saturday Dec. 10 at 12pm and 4:30pm.

“We are honored and proud to host the upcoming Virginia Group 5A and 6A State Championship games,” said Hampton University President Dr. William R. Harvey. “Our staff, in conjunction with the Virginia High School League officials, will do our best to ensure all fans enjoy their visit to Armstrong Stadium for two exciting championship contests.”

Gates will open to the general public at 10:30am. All game tickets will be $10, children six and under will be admitted free with a parent. Parking Lots 10 & 11 will be used for general public parking at a cost of $5.

“We thank the staff at Hampton University for their hard work in preparation to host the VHSL football state championships,” said Tom Dolan, VHSL Assistant Director for Compliance. “We hope this is the beginning on a long and successful partnership with Hampton University.”

This game will bring some of the top teams and players from the Commonwealth to our historic "Home by the Sea”.

The 5A championship game will feature Stone Bridge vs. Highland Springs. The 6A championship game will feature Westfield vs. Oscar Smith.

Initially constructed in 1928 by William E. Lee, a graduate of Hampton's Building and Construction Program, Armstrong Stadium is one of the best football venues in the region. Under the administration of Dr. Harvey, a number of renovations have been completed. In 1978, a new press box was completed on the west side.

New bleachers were installed on the west side in 1985 and the east (visitors) side in 1986. Stadium lights for night games, along with a new track were added in 1988. In 1991, a new press box on the east side was added, along with TV towers to accommodate cameras for televised games. Ready rooms underneath the west side stands were completed in 1992. In 1998, the press box was renovated, the stadium was bricked, the playing field was resurfaced and a new scoreboard with the Pro Star Video Screen was added.

During the spring of 1999, additional seating in the North end zone was added; along with a complete new look to the main entrance of the stadium. The new additions also house nine offices, a conference room, three multipurpose audio/visual team rooms (offense/defense/team), a locker room, a reception and waiting areas and a team lounge. With the addition of the end zone seats, Armstrong Stadium's capacity is over 12,000 including standing room. Prior to the start of the 2014 season, artificial turf was installed for the game field.

VHSL has conducted football championships since 1920, when Newport News High School defeated Jefferson Senior High School of Roanoke, 14-7, in VHSL's first title football game. Since that time, Hampton High School has won a VHSL-record 17 championships, four of them consecutive (1995-98). A six-division format and power-ratings system were put into place in 1986 to promote more equitable competition between similarly sized schools.
