When I met Mrs.Coretta King
|
Posted By: willie hall on February 01, 2006 I was just speaking with someone (young black female) and I said "you know Coretta King passed" they said " who is that?" wow I will never forget hearing Mrs. King speak at a MLK day celebration sponsored bye the company I work for in 2005. What i remember most is how beautiful she was even at the age of 77(@ that time). She was so graceful. When she got up from her seat to take the podium the room of mostly "white suits" gave her a standing ovation. The ovation went on for nearly 2 minutes before she asked everyone to please be seated. Even though she spoke barily at a whisper her words were so powerful! She spoke about the life of her husband. "I dont like when people call my husband a Civil Rights Leader! HE WAS NOT A CIVIL RIGHTS LEADER! MY HUSBAND WAS A PROFIT!....Many people belive he was killed because of his work for civil rights issues but thats not true! He wasnt killed because he had legislation passed that banned segregation or because he stood for non-violence. He was killed because he was about to reveal a campaign titled THE POOR PEOPLES CAMPAIGN. In this campaign he was going to exspose America and the government for being the crooks that they are. If you look to the Bible it states that money is the root of all evil! It was Martins next mission to exspose this to America and bring change. Thats why he was killed!.....I have made it my lifes work to carry his dream and his vision further. " She went on and even had words for the company that I worked for who were sponsoring this event she was speaking at. She said: "You have to do more! Its not ok to only celebrate his legacy once a year. Its not just a day to sit home and relax. Children learn what the day is for its for you to take action and stand up for injustice. Stand up every day not only 1 day in January." You could tell that even in 2004 she was still affected by the death of Dr. King. She paused several times when speaking of him and you could see the love she had for him it was written all over her face. That event and hearing her speak greatly changed the way I thought of Dr. King but more importantly her. My first lady often says: "BESIDE NOT BEHIND every great man is a great woman and if the man is the head then a good woman is the neck!" Mrs. King thanks for being our neck may you rest in the arms of God forever! If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
