Ready for Responsibility: Top Degrees That Will Turn You into a Leader

Ready for Responsibility: Top Degrees That Will Turn You into a Leader
Posted By: Hannah Whittenly on December 21, 2016

Degrees that teach you leadership come in all shapes and sizes. While you may be inclined to think that a leadership degree is an MBA - it can be, but it’s not exclusive - not all degrees that prep you for leadership are business degrees. For those who might be worried about having to leave your field of interest all together in order to be in leadership, take heart. Here are four types of degrees that ready you for that role.

1. Music Degree

According to Forbes, a music degree can prepare you for a position in leadership if you’re interested in being a music director. Usually musicians that are interested in this study music and management at the masters level to qualify for this type of job. And according to the business site, this type of degree can be quite lucrative. The average mid-career music degree-holder earns almost $60,000 a year.

2. Nursing and Patient Care

The medical field counts among the hottest career tracks for this new age. Many people pursuing a medical degree are interested in jobs as a physician or nurse, but there’s more to the medical profession. Medical professionals that are interested in managing a team of nurses, doctors, or even a hospital will find that a masters-level track in medical management will help them reach their goals. For example, Bradley University’s online nurse practitioner degree program demonstrates how an advanced degree can look for someone interested in medical leadership.

Such a person might lead a research team, become a nurse educator, or run the office of an urgent care clinic.

3. Educational Technology

While many educational technologists work as classroom teachers, who just so happen to want to use technology in the classroom, others take on a more administrative role. According to Chron, some people who get an EdTech degree coordinate the technology needs for their schools or their school districts while others perform the same job, but in a corporate setting. These admins work on budgets, plan technology for their area, and provide technology training for faculty or employees.

4. MBA in Leadership

Forbes cites learning to manage people as one of the most underrated reasons that people get an MBA. But for those interested in pursuing corporate leadership roles after their masters, this counts as one of the most important reasons to get an advanced business degree.

Additionally, given how international the business world has become, a good MBA program should give you the opportunity to rub elbows with lots of different types of people. Your coursework should teach you how to manage these various groups of people. Being able to lead people requires a specific set of skills that B-school should teach you.

Being a leader means more than just owning a company. It means managing people in the various business environments you may find yourself in. Fortunately, today’s educational environment allows you to learn the leadership skills you need regardless of the industry you’d like to lead in. From music management to medical management, there’s bound to be a right degree to teach you what you need to know to thrive in that industry.
