Corinne Vaughn, Miss Southern Univ and A&M College

Posted By: Emrs Aries on January 18, 2017

Hometown: Campti, Louisiana

Year in School: Senior

Major/Minor: Political Science

Expected Graduation: 2016

Extracurricular Activities: I am a student of the Dolores Richard Spikes Honors College here on campus, maintaining honors standing since my Freshman year. Thus, I am a member of the Honors Student Association, which focuses on promoting high academic standards for its students as well as encouraging campus involvement for its members. I serve as the 86th Miss Southern University and A&M College, focusing on service to the community as well as on campus involvement. My court and I hold hygiene drives, teddy bear drives for Our Lady of The Lake Children's Hospital, as well as speaking engagements for surrounding high school students, focusing on encouraging young ladies, in particular, to find their place in the ""Queendom"" and always understand their worth. I am a member of Think Smart, Be Safe HIV/**** Advocacy and Awareness Organization, previously serving as its Treasurer. We are an on campus group that offers free testing to our students and sometimes, to the members of our community. Our main function is to promote safe sex practices on campus, but to also bury the stigma surrounding HIV/****. I am a dedicated member of the Black History Club, previously serving as its President. Our main function is to work with the Southern University Pre-Law Society (in conjunction with the Southern University Law Center), the Political Science Association, and the Criminal Justice Club to host events that bridge the gap between our Black community and law enforcement as well as hosting on campus awareness marches for social change surrounding issues that plague our community. I am a Spring 2014 initiate of the Kappa Kappa Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity, performing across the community, promoting music and service through the arts and passing on its enjoyment.

Leisure Activities: I involve myself in various Open Mic events and talent showcases.

Anytime I get the chance to display my poetry and/or vocal talents, I do so. I love to volunteer at the Head Start programs in my hometown of Campti, Louisiana. I also love to hang our with friends. We cook, play spades, and kick back with some nice music, which is our getaway from our every day trails.

Career Goals: I will ultimately attend law school where I will focus majorly on Civil Rights. I plan on traveling the world and promoting equity and fairness, starting right here in Louisiana. As I have experienced, we can draw an outline for our lives, but our lives may not want to follow that path. Therefore, I will take my experiences as they present themselves.

What is your most memorable contribution as a Campus Queen?: On September 24, 2016 I experienced a situation which changed my life completely. I have always made myself aware of injustices surrounding people of color and assaults pertaining to women, but on this particular day, I become a **** of sexual ****. I did not want to allow my experience to be just that: a negative experience. Therefore, I hosted self-defense classes in collaboration with the police department and boxing instructors on my campus. After bringing together several students on Southern University campus and working with DaEdge One Productions, we were able to crete an awareness video that will touch the lives of many people. My team and I hosted multiple sexual **** awareness meetings where young ladies were able to share their stories and finally find peace in their storms. For me, my case is under investigation, but I found my "exhale," so to speak. Life was given to my purpose as a campus Queen. I FEEL every word I speak quite differently, now. I feel as though God has put me in a place where I am not only imparting encouragement, but I am able to give life and hope, which is what I am doing.
