Posted By: Hija Chang on January 30, 2017 Written by Latoya Crowe Howard University announces the appointment of two new members to its board of trustees, James J. Murren, chairman and CEO of MGM Resorts International and Chris Carr, executive vice president and chief procurement officer of Starbucks, effective immediately. “Both Jim Murren and Chris Carr are exceptional executives with strong experience creating value for businesses and leading organizations through the complexities of a dynamic and changing world,” said Stacey J. Mobley, Esq., chairman of the board of trustees. “We are very excited they are joining our board.” In December 2008, Murren was named chairman and CEO of MGM Resorts International, today one of the world’s most powerful and diverse entertainment brands. He leads a company of more than 71,000 employees operating in 17 destinations nationally and internationally. The company opened MGM National Harbor in Maryland on December 8, 2016 and is in the process of developing MGM Springfield in Massachusetts. Murren serves as chairman of MGM China Holdings Ltd., which owns MGM Macau and is developing a resort in Cotai. He also serves as chairman of MGM Growth Properties, a real estate investment trust engaged in the acquisition, ownership and leasing of large-scale destination entertainment and leisure resorts. During his tenure, Murren has overseen the growth and transformation of the organization. A native of Fairfield, Connecticut, Murren earned his bachelor’s degree in art history and urban studies from Trinity College, where he serves on the board of trustees and is the chair of the Leadership Board of the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine. He is chairman of the American Gaming Association, a member of the board of trustees of the Brookings Institution, and on the National Infrastructure Advisory Council. He also served as the executive chairman of the board of directors of the Corporate Responsibility Officers Association, a professional society for corporate responsibility practitioners. He has been recognized as a Responsible CEO of the Year by CR Magazine and Executive of the Year by Casino Journal. He is a recipient of the Distinguished Leader Award from the University of Massachusetts’ Isenberg School of Management. Under his leadership, MGM Resorts International is a Fortune Magazine’s World’s Most Admired Companies. A recipient of the 2016 Top 100 Most Influential Blacks in Corporate America by Savoy Magazine, Carr has been an invaluable force in Starbucks’ quest to enhance enterprise-wide functional strategic sourcing, shape its global supplier base and generate customer-insight around innovation. Carr previously served as Starbucks’ executive vice president of licensed stores in the U.S. and Americas. In that position, he was responsible for the strategic planning, annual operations, market planning and profitability for the region’s 6,200 licensed stores, which generated annual system-wide sales in excess of $3 billion. Carr earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of San Diego and an MBA from the New York Institute of Technology. He serves on the board of Recreational Equipment Inc., commonly known as REI, and is a member of the National Black MBA Association, the Executive Leadership Council, the Institute of Prostate Cancer Council Research, and the University of San Diego Emerging Leaders Council. He also was awarded a top 20 spot among the inaugural list of UPstanding 100 Leading Ethnic Minority Executives. “This is an exciting time for the university, students, alumni and faculty, as we prepare to celebrate our milestone 150th anniversary,” said Howard University President Wayne A. I. Frederick. I’m confident that both individuals will make great contributions to enhance the legacy of our great institution.” ABOUT HOWARD Founded in 1867, Howard University is a private, research university that is comprised of 13 schools and colleges.
