Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on February 01, 2017 ASU's Founders' Day is Friday! - Historic Bell Ringing Ceremony at 9 a.m. in front of the ASU Library - - Founder's Day Convocation at 10 a.m. in the ASU Dunn-Oliver Acadome - HISTORIC BELL RINGING CEREMONY @ 9 a.m. FRIDAY Join us at Alabama State University's Founders' Day events this Friday as we conduct our Historic Bell Ringing ceremony at 9 a.m. with Interim-President Leon C. Wilson presiding and the faculty with him in front of the ASU Library. At this solemn ceremony, we toll our original 1867 campus bell for the nine former slaves who founded our University in Marion, Ala., as well as for our deceased ASU presidents. It is a poignant and inspiring ceremony with great photo/video appeal and opportunities for your news audience. FOUNDER'S DAY CONVOCATION @ 10 a.m. FRIDAY Following the Bell Ceremony is the official Founder's Day Convocation that begins Friday at 10 a.m. and is full of pomp and circumstance as the entire ASU community is assembled to celebrate the University's founding with spoken word, song, prayer, dance and our powerful and famous keynote speaker, ASU alumna and acclaimed actor, Bonita J. Hamilton, who stars as Shenzi in Broadway's "The Lion King." She will be available for interviews before and after the event. A native of Montgomery, Hamilton is a 1997 graduate of ASU and has appeared in a myriad of Broadway and theatrical plays and productions. ASU's interim president said Hamilton is a "shining" example of all that is great with ASU. "We are extremely proud to have a speaker of Ms. Hamilton's caliber to deliver the keynote address at the Founders' Day Convocation," said Interim-President Dr. Leon C. Wilson. "Bonita Hamilton has taken the name of Alabama State University from Montgomery to Broadway, and she is a shining example of the caliber of alumni that this great University produces. It is an honor to have her back home to share with our students and with this community from her wealth of experiences." Both events are free and open to the public and to all members of the Hornet Nation. If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
