5 Organization Tips for Teachers

5 Organization Tips for Teachers
Posted By: Dixie Somers on February 13, 2017

As you well know, keeping an organized and efficient classroom is crucial for student success. However, you might not always have the best classroom set-up provided for you by your school. Therefore, as an educator, it becomes part of your job to find ways to best arrange your classroom. Every teacher has different students, a different classroom set-up, and a different teaching style. The following five organizational tips can be adapted to suit your needs but can work for most classrooms.

1. Create a Flow Wall system

Wall storage can be a major space-saver in a classroom. Creating a flow wall system makes space for both storing and displaying items. When you do this, the classroom can look brighter, more organizer, and more inviting overall. Even better, this models the idea of respect. When students see that you respect them, their learning, and the school's property, they can emulate that behavior. Installing a flow wall system would likely require an entire classroom remodel, but the easier clean-up time in the future is worth it.

2. Utilize bins, crates, plastic storage containers, and even old glass jars

Storage bins, crates, plastic containers, and even glass jars can be put to use. A large glass jar that once contained some delicious strawberry jam you ate can make a great pencil-holder in the classroom. Bins, crates, and containers can be easily stacked and stored, giving more room on the floor. Students can get into the routine of knowing what is stored where and more easily help with clean-up.

3. Seriously, label everything!

Do you have a label-maker? If not, you might want to invest in one or nab one from the front office if your school has one on hand.

Labeling storage containers, cabinets, and drawers might seem tedious, but it's actually a huge time-saver during class time. Students will know where to look for the supplies they need or where they're supposed to put homework. Instead of spending extra time looking for where something is located or needs to go, you and your students can focus on learning without being so distracted.

4. If you have an in-classroom library, create a check-out system

If you have an in-classroom library (as many elementary school teachers do, as well as some middle and high school teachers), you can create a check-out system for books. Instead of using students' names on check-out cards, you can simply use their student numbers and keep this check-out system in place every year. This helps students become more responsible for the books they use, and it is a great way for you to keep track of who has which book. This is especially helpful for lower elementary students who are learning how to respect others' property. For older students, you can create a computer database of check-outs and even share it on a classroom web page.

5. Store iPads or tablets in labeled caddies, and put earbuds in a bead case

To build upon the idea of storage containers, these can be especially helpful for storing iPads or tablets and earbuds. Buy a plastic caddy and label it with the number of the iPad or tablet that is to be stored in it. A large bead storage case works great for earbuds. Instead of dealing with a tangled mess of wires, each earbud set gets its own little cubby space in the case, and these, too, can be labeled by number. These numbers can even correlate with students' class numbers, which ensures that each student knows which iPad or tablet and earbuds are theirs and encourages them to be responsible for their classroom property.
However you decide to organize your classroom, be creative. Be colorful and bright. Let your classroom space reflect the values you are trying to teach your students. Remember, they are looking to you to model this behavior.
