Spelmanite 2010-needin some advice

Posted By: Tonya Dickerson on February 10, 2006 I am so psyched to be going to Spelman college. It's like my mecca. My best friend and I will be starting in Fall 2006!! I am just cruising the net, looking for scholarships and stuff. $30,000!!! That is crazy, but the government has so much money out there half of it is paid for. See, I have heard the rumors about Spelman: they're all lesbians, they're stuck up, they're all strippers. All that crap. I went on the campus and felt right at home. So if that makes me an arrogant lesbian stripper, Check this out....I really don't care. Those women are cool and know where they are going. And no....from what I know, all Morehouse men are not gay or stuck-up either. The people at these schools just know what they want. I think of who started these rumors. Probably somebody who was tryna holla at either a Morehouse Man, or Spelman Woman, got turned down and was mad enough to start talking crap. Every campus has lesbians, every school has strippers and hoochie-mamas and etc. I mean why do people pick on Spelmanites....I'll tell you why. It is because a Spelman Woman is held to higher standards and is always in the spotlight. I think Clark Atlanta women and Spelman women should come together than let the radio and rumors get in the way. I heard some DSTs on the radio in ATL, Hot 107.9. The guy almost called them Spelman women, but was like "my bad". One of the women got all offended. I mean...what is that? You have the potential to be someone's she-ro but you want to feed into rumors. Why do Clark Atlanta Women not like Spelman women? There is no reason to dislike the whole school just because someone else did. I mean, everyone has one person that they want to strangle but a whole school? Isn't that promoting the very thing that we as black people stand against-PREJUDICE???? Maybe it's just me. Clark Women and Spelman Women-let's get it together. Ya'll are someone's hero. Some young black girl, whether it be your cousin, or the little girl you walk past in the store. Young black girls need to see older black girls come together and be confident. Feeding into the black girl-catfight stereotype is terrible. They are gonna follow you. The simple fact that you are in college, plus it is a HBCU, makes you special to someone. Think about the effect you have had on any young girls in your community...now imagine them at the age of 10 dressed like 29 year olds. Not cute, come on black women....if we don't empower ourselves, who will? Obviously not most of our own men.
