Women’s Basketball Senior Graduates as Class Valedictorian

North Carolina Central University women's basketball senior guard Morgan Jones has been named the NCCU Student-Athlete of the Month for January 2017 in recognition of her outstanding performance in the classroom and on the hardwood.

A native of Stockbridge, Georgia, Jones topped the Lady Eagles with 108 points and 22 steals, and was second on the squad with 15 assists during the first month of the new year. In eight games, she averaged 13.5 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.8 steals and 1.9 assists per contest.

The 5-9 shooting guard scored a January-high 17 points with five rebounds, three assists and two steals in a win over Delaware State on Jan. 10. On Jan. 16 at Hampton, she recorded 14 points, six boards and five steals.

A week later versus Howard, Jones collected 16 points, four rebounds, five steals and two assists.

Jones graduated NCCU as class valedictorian in December, boasting a 3.96 overall grade point average and earning a degree in criminal justice. She is currently pursuing a master's degree in psychology.

The graduate student was recently announced to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District™ First Team for the second year in-a-row and has earned MEAC Commissioner's All-Academic Team twice. Jones is also a prominent member of the NCCU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and Alpha Phi Sigma National Criminal Justice Honor Society.

Following the basketball season, Jones will consider playing professional basketball overseas or serving as a graduate assistant with the NCCU women's basketball program. Her long-term goal is to become an FBI agent.
