Texas College celebrates heritage, diversity with 'Religious Emphasis Week'

Posted By: Hija Chang on February 21, 2017 By: Cara Prichard This week, Texas College in Tyler is celebrating its heritage and diversity. It's all apart of their annual Religious Emphasis Week. It's also the oldest institute of higher education in the city. Their founding members were ministers and they continue with the same principles 123 years later. "I came here just to play football and fell in love with the whole school itself," said Jake Martin, Public Relations Director and alumnus of Texas College. "We have about 1,000 students. In that 1,000 students pretty much provides a family atmosphere, you get to know everyone. They're going to know you and they're here to help you." Martin said he's most proud of the history behind the school and the ability to share its founding principles of faith. "We are a private Christian institution," he said. "We don't have to wait like public institutions for a crisis to happen or erupt, instead we can kind of tackle it head on." For more than 30 years, they've held Religious Emphasis Week. Their theme this year: "Can they see the light: Shining with a purpose." "One of our missions is to be sure that students are engaged intellectually, psychologically, socially. This is time for some, it will be a refresher, a time to re-ignite, for some it will be a new experience," said Campus Minister Reverend Jamie Capers. All week, they're taking the time to invest in the spiritual lives of their students, faculty and staff. "Our focus is on teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ but we are made up of not just Christians, but people from other backgrounds as well," said Reverend Capers. While it's important for them to be involved within the classroom, he said it's just as important to be involved outside of the classroom. "Helping them understand their mission and purpose in the context in which they are," he added. The community is invited to several of their events this week. Tuesday, February 21, they're holding a Community Engagement Forum at 3 p.m. in the Glass Auditorium on campus. Thursday, February 23, they're having an outreacha project at the Salvation Army.
